Sea Fans and Soft Corals

Sea fans, or gorgonians, are members of the same group as the soft corals. Unlike hard corals they do not contain symbiotic algae, and instead feed primarily on phytoplankton. Consequently, they are often in found in areas with strong currents. As they do not rely on sunlight they can be found in a wide range of habitats, from the turbid harbours to the deep ocean.
