Corals are the heart and soul of the reef, bringing structure and food to the tropical oceans. They are responsible for the largest living structure on earth (the Great Barrier Reef), but are individually amongst the smallest inhabitants on the reef. Individual coral animals (polyps) band together to build a coral colony, and their evolutionary success is obvious in the bewildering array of shapes, sizes and colours of the elaborate forms they build.
