Temperate and Subtropical

While many underwater images focus on tropical reefs, subtropical and temperate coastal seas support highly productive ecosystems and can provide many opportunities to the underwater photographer. Temperate seas are too cold for reef-building corals, and the three-dimensional habitat structure is generally provided primarily by seaweeds such as kelp. Their rich waters also provide an ideal environment for filter-feeders, such as sponges and gorgonians
